Dave Deal RIP

Dave “Big” Deal, a Los Angeles native, began his illustration career in the late 1950s and early 1960s, allegedly as a shop gofer for Von Dutch. He managed to meld two of his favorite interests — hot rods and air-cooled Volkswagens — into his cartoonish illustration style by taking on advertising work that most hot rodders would recognize: the Armor-All Viking, for example. Some of his most reproduced illustrations as of late advertised Darrell Zipp’s Zipper Motors. Deal died October 14; some of his work can be seen at his Web site, www.bigdealart.com.
